Before you write

Six questions,answered plainly.

Makers ask us the same six things before the first call. Each gets a short answer, set large, and a longer one beneath.

Short answer

Twelve weeks, from the first call to files at the printer.

A full season is twelve weeks: three to listen and look, five to design, four to test on the real container and prepare files. A single label takes four weeks, a range takes eight.

  • Good to know: seasons start in January, March, June and September.

Short answer

A fixed fee, agreed before we start: $3,800 to $14,500.

A label is $3,800, a range of up to six products is $8,400, and a full season of identity, packaging and launch pieces is $14,500. You pay in thirds, and the fee does not move unless the scope does.

  • Good to know: printing is paid to the printer, never marked up.

Short answer

Yes. Most of our work begins with something worth keeping.

If your customers already recognise the mark, we redraw it carefully and build the system around it. When a mark is holding the product back we say so plainly, and show you why on the shelf, not on a slide.

  • Good to know: a careful redraw is included in every range and season.

Short answer

We prepare the files and stand next to the press.

We work with four printers we trust for labels, cartons and pouches, and choose with you by run size and finish. We check the first sheets in person, or by courier proof, before the run goes ahead.

  • Good to know: minimum runs start at around 500 labels.

Short answer

Nothing, on purpose. The studio lies fallow.

Four seasons of twelve weeks leave four weeks over, and we spend them not working for clients. No project runs across December, and email is read once a week.

  • Good to know: the winter season begins on 4 January.

Short answer

You do, all of them, from the day of the last payment.

You receive the working files, the font licence details, the dielines and a one-page guide for whoever prints or designs for you next. There is no retainer, and nothing is held back.

  • Good to know: we keep an archive of your files for five years.

Something else? Put it in your first note.
